Tobago doctors are eager to work beside their Cuban counterparts who are now employed in the island’s health care system.

Dr Mentor Melville indicated this mood while speaking at the recent welcoming ceremony for the eight Cuban medical practitioners.

Dr. Melville who has worked with Cuban doctors in Tobago since 2003 said their medical skills are top class and will help improve and add value to the health sector.

The Arts and Multiculturalism Minister, Winston Gypsy Peters, is defending a plan by the National Carnival Bands Leaders Association to charge Parade of the Bands participants a mandatory fee this year, while some quarters have opposed the move by the N.C.B.A.

However, speaking at the weekly post cabinet news briefing held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s Thursday, Minister Peters said he sees nothing wrong with introducing the fee which he described as minimal and Minister Peters also said that he thought the funds collected could help the organization cover some of its operational expenses.

A police officer at the time of the 1990 attempted coup by the Jamaat Al Muslimeen is claiming bad treatment by the institution he once served and admits life has been tough following the ordeal.

Speaking today at the Commission of Inquiry into the insurrection former Acting Sergeant, Raymond Julien, said events surrounding the coup prematurely ended his career and he has not fully healed following the dramatic experience.

Mr Julien was on duty at the Red House before the parliament was stormed by the Jamaat.
He testified that senior officials in the Police service did not visit or get in contact with him and his salary was even stopped.

Police are yet to identify a man who was shot and killed during an attack on 3 men in the Trou Macaque, Laventille area

Reports say around 6:30am yesterday, brothers 29 year old David Grant and 32 year old Atiba Grant were in the company of another man at their home when a vehicle pulled up and three armed men alighted from it

The Grant brothers and the third man began to run but were pursued by the three attackers who opened fire on them

However it is believed that one of the attackers was accidentally shot about the body by his accomplices and died at the scene.   Investigators say the man is about 25 years old and is believed to be from Diego Martin

The Grant brothers were rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital where they remain warded.

Three cabinet ministers say they will follow the direction of the rest of the Cabinet when it comes to supporting the petition by Works Minister Jack Warner calling for the implementation of the death penalty.

At the post-Cabinet media briefing yesterday Ministers Winston Peters, Bhoe Tewarie and Vernella Alleyne-Toppin agreed that they all have their personal views on the death penalty.

However they all maintained that they would support what the cabinet decided to do.

Minister Warner launched his petition on Tuesday when he visited protesting residents of the Prime Minister’s Siparia constituency.


Government plans to spend 96 million dollars on Carnival 2012.

Arts and Multiculturalism Minister, Winston Gypsy Peters, revealed this at the weekly post cabinet news briefing held at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s this afternoon.

Minister Peters believes the money spent will bring benefits to the country and contribute to the Gross Domestic Product.

Mr Peters also indicated Caribbean Airlines has given a projection of over two hundred thousand visitors coming into the country via the carrier for the Carnival season.
