Former San Fernando Mayor, Ian Atherly, has received a legal letter from the chairman of Southex Promotions Limited warning against the use of the term National Chutney Soca Monarch

Southex Chairman, George Singh, is the promoter of the Chutney Soca Monarch while Mr. Atherly plans to host a show entitled the National Chutney Soca Monarch competition which is produced by the National Chutney Foundation

Late last year Singh had decided to move the 2012 Chutney Soca Monarch Competition from its birthplace at Skinner Park, San Fernando, to the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

This prompted Atherly to launch the new competition-The National Carnival Chutney Soca Monarch-to be held at Skinner Park on February 18.

Singh argues that the term National Chutney Soca Monarch would create confusion in the minds of the public and adds that the Chutney Soca Monarch is a registered name to the directors of Southex Event Management Company Ltd.

Singh says the issue has been referred to his lawyers who will take any action that is necessary

No one will be spared, that’s the warning being sent by the Water and Sewage Authority to its customers who owe the state entity outstanding money.

WASA’s General Manager, Corporate Communication, Ellen Lewis, made the comment as the utility officially started its nation-wide Name and Shame Disconnection Exercise.

Speaking with reporters at Chisholm Street, San -Fernando today where the first domestic customer was disconnected, Ms Lewis said WASA is owed about 500 million dollars by errant persons.

She added about sixty-eight thousand persons have failed to honour their financial obligations with the utility and many large entities with outstanding bills have started to pay up, in order to avoid embarrassment.

Chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, Gillian Lucky, says the PCA is yet to receive any official complaints from persons who were the alleged victims of police brutality at Sunday’s Panorama Semi finals.

However Ms. Lucky says that under section 26 of the Police Complaints Authority Act, the Authority can begin its own investigation without receiving a specific complaint.

Lucky was speaking on the matter during a televised interview this morning.

She is urging members of the public to bring any recordings of the incident or any other documented evidence in to the PCA as soon as possible.

Commenting on statements by senior police officials that the actions of the police officers at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Sunday was lawful, Ms. Lucky said the PCA does not want to have officers being wrongfully accused but she also does not want the rights of the public to be ignored.

This country’s highest court, the London-based Privy Council, has ruled in favour of a mentally-ill Morvant man who stabbed his 77-year-old friend to death in 2004.

The Privy Council ruled yesterday that based on medical evidence, Nigel Brown of D’Abadie, Arouca, has a mental disability that should be considered by local courts in reviewing his conviction.

Following a sitting of the 5 Law Lords, a 24-page judgment delivered by Lord Brian Kerr, ruled that Brown’s case be remitted to the Court of Appeal to determine the “safety” of his mandatory death sentence in light of the new evidence.

Brown was convicted by a 12-member jury in the Port-of-Spain High Court on February 7, 2007, of the murder of Second Caledonia, Morvant, resident Lloyd Bailey.

Prior to the 1990 Insurrection, the Jamaat al Muslimeen had distributed van loads of guns to crime hotspot areas.  This according to former TTT journalist, Raul Pantin.

Mr. Pantin gave evidence at Tuesday’s sitting of the commission of inquiry into the 1990 attempted coup.

He told the commission, a senior Jamaat member reliably informed him of the distribution of the weapons in a bid to gain support to overthrow the government, but this did not occur.
