The Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago yesterday considered and passed a no-confidence motion against Attorney General John Jeremie.

At a special meeting yesterday at the Hall of Justice a motion with three items, all of which were voted on, separately, were supported by the majority of members.

- Item A "condemned in the strongest manner the reported attempts by the Honourable Senator John Jeremie to improperly and illegally interfere with criminal prosecutions for political purposes".

That was carried by a vote of 121 for/67 against.

- Item B "condemned in the strongest manner the reported attempts by Jeremie to undermine and threaten the constitutional independence of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions".

That was carried 127 for /59 against

- Item C "that it (the Law Association) has absolutely no confidence in the Honourable Senator John Jeremie as Attorney General and as titular Head of the Bar of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago", was carried by a vote of 106 for/82 against.

Law Association president Martin Daly, talking to reporters afterward, stressed that the association had no position on Jeremie "until this minute" (when its membership voted on the motion). Stressing that the Council of the Law Association was completely neutral and allowed members to express themselves, Daly stated: "Now that members have expressed themselves, this represents the views of the Law Association." He added: "The Council is bound by any resolution of its members passed in general meeting."

It means, he conceded, that the Law Association now has no confidence in the Attorney General.

But Daly said the association was certainly not proposing to tell Jeremie what he should now do.
