Commissioner of the Couva Regional Carnival Committee Paula Atherly is reporting several injuries as a result of last evening’s traditional

Stick-fighting competition.

The competition was held at Gilbert Park in Couva

If you’re not aware… stick fighting is a generic term for martial art

Contenders use simple, slender, blunt wooden 'sticks' to “fight” each other

According to Ms Atherly, it’s the first time in years so many were injured

On a brighter note, Atherly says she and her colleagues are considering locating a larger venue for the event next year

She says this is because the event attracted an ever larger crowd than past years

She was quick to point out, however, spectators were well behaved as security forces were out in full effect.
