The reintroduction of corporal punishment as a solution to the problems of indiscipline and violence among students does not have the support of the group Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago.
The organisation is of the view that many young people creating serious problems were recipients of corporal punishment.
In a release today, C.B.T.T. noted the measure will not go down well with many parents because they are against teachers beating their children in any form or manner.
C.B.T.T. President Harrack Balramsingh said what is needed is greater effort to help young people stay away from substance abuse which it believes is the root cause of a lot of indiscipline and violence in schools and communities.
Mr Balramsingh stated he is not against students being punished for going against school rules and regulations and maintained children should know that there is an authority which makes sure there is social order, whether at school, home or elsewhere.
He also urged parents to be exemplars to children.
