The Congress of the People feels the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, James Philbert, to act as Police Commissioner, would only fuel suspicions about political interference in the operations of the Police Service Commission.
In a release on Friday, the PSC said it agreed to terminate the extended period of Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul at his request effective Friday July 4.
The PSC said in the absence of a decision by Parliament on its selection of a new Commissioner of Police and after due and a deliberate review of all the available senior personnel, it has appointed Philbert to act in the position.
However, in an interview today the C.O.P.’s Shadow Minister for Justice and Legal Affairs, Anand Ramlogan, said the appointment of Philbert to act over Stephen Williams, after the PSC recommended Williams as it choice for the top post is illogical and irrational.
Ramlogan said he does not have an issue with Mr Philbert but is concerned about the direction the process is heading.
