The controversial debate over who will fill the post of Police Commissioner is expected to take place in Parliament today Leader of Government Business Colm Imbert will pilot the highly-anticipated debate, based on a government motion seeking approval for Senior Supt Stephen Williams’ appointment.
UNC chief whip Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj said yesterday a fiery debate could ensue in the House of Representatives today on the appointment of Williams as Police Commissioner, depending on the Government’s position on the matter The Government recently refused to give its view of Williams’ nomination, stating that it was a “very sensitive matter.”
Debate takes place as CoP Trevor Paul demits office today.
Deputy Police Commissioner James Philbert was appointed last week by the Police Service Commission to act as top cop, effective tomorrow.
The PSC said the choice was made in the absence of a decision by Parliament on the CoP issue.
The PSC nominated Williams to the President for the post on June 13.
Its reported that yesterday… UNC’s Maharaj said, “Government has brought this motion to support Williams’ appointment, therefore one would expect them to explain how— that the PSC having selected Williams for the post— Government has allowed the constitutional process to be frustrated to the point of having an acting-Police Commissioner appointed.
